NHS screening programmes

On this page, you will find information about different NHS screening programmes. Some of these screening procedures are undertaken here in your own GP practice, while others are run by a separate service.

Breast cancer screening

In this video, Dr Helen Stephens talks about the NHS breast cancer screening programme. The screening involves taking X-ray pictures of your breasts to check for breast cancer or pre-cancerous changes. An early diagnosis means a better chance of successful treatment.

Abdominal aortic aneurysm screening

In this video, Dr Jim Wood talks about the NHS AAA screening programme. An AAA is a swelling in a large blood vessel in your tummy. If this swelling gets too big, it can burst which can be life threatening. The aim of the screening programme is to check the size of the blood vessel, and treat any swelling before it becomes serious.

Cervical cancer screening (smear tests)

This involves taking a small sample of cells from the cervix and testing them for a virus which is the main cause of cervical cancer. The test can be done by one of our practice nurses at your nearest GP surgery.
